Warp Painting Part One

place QWSG Studio 744 Primrose Street, Qualicum Beach, BC, Canada expand_more

Learn about Warp Painting with cellulose fibres!

In Part One, we'll discuss possibilities and see a warp demonstration. In Part Two, we'll paint (or overpaint) a suitable cellulose fibre warp (or skein).

Cellulose fibres: linen, silk, cotton, rayon (which includes Tencel, bamboo) jute, ramie. Consider which fibres would work best for a scarf.

Cost: donation if you choose to use some of my yarns. I’ll bring some cottons; e.g. 5/2, some rayons and some silk mixtures.

Purpose:

  • to learn about warp painting with cellulose fibres (cotton, rayon, silk, bamboo, linen, hemp),
  • to discuss possibilities of suitable fibres for painting a warp,
  • to design a warp for two scarves
  • to see a demonstration of winding a warp;
  • to  wind a warp for yourself, or to go home confident and able to wind one yourself.

I'll be taking:

  • sample scarves to discuss sett and design
  • examples of suitable cellulose fibres
  • some yarns that you may want to use
  • dyed warps to demonstrate warp painting

Participants should take:

  • notebook, pencil
  • fibre and yarn choices for warps and wefts. Colour doesn’t matter, because the warp painting covers it all.
  • a snack if you like
  • questions and answers!

We may stay longer if you choose to wind a warp.

Part Two: Warp Painting Day: Prepare for it to happen in June as the weather improves for an outdoor activity. Stay tuned and prepare your warp!
Bonus: If you’re a knitter and you would like to paint skeins of your chosen fibre (see list), you are very welcome to try this challenge. We’ll have fun.
