Date and Time: Saturday April 27 10:00 am-2:30 pm (includes ½ hr bring own lunch break)

Introduction to Using Natural Dyes with Carol Hunter: Do you want to learn the basics of dyeing fibres with natural dyes? This combination of lecture and show and tell will help students develop an understanding of natural dyes, mordants and which work best with animal-based fibre (eg wool) versus types of plant based fibre (eg cotton). This 4 hour workshop will teach you the basic theories of dyeing as well as safe methods of dyeing. Carol will have samples of yarns and fibres that she has dyed as well as samples of a wide variety of natural dyes and mordants. This introduction to the use of natural dyes could form the basis for future hands-on dyeing workshops with Carol.

Instructor: A weaver and spinner, Carol Hunter first tried natural dyeing in 2015 and the excitement of producing colour on fibre using plants has never diminished since that first dye pot. Through countless hours of hands-on exploration, supported by a large collection of natural dyeing books, Carol learned to dye with plant leaves, flowers, roots, bark as well as local lichens, and mushrooms. During covid Carol added to her knowledge of historic dyeing practices and the science behind effective natural dyeing by taking two comprehensive dye courses offered by Mamies Schoolhouse in Cape Breton. Guilded Mastering Natural Dyes: Module one Foundations and Module two Colour.  Carol enjoys sharing her love and knowledge of dyeing through talks and workshops. Carol is a valued member of the QWSG who excels in weaving, spinning and dyeing.
